ERV Boxscore for September 5, vs. Florida

The good news and bad news about this game center around the same thing: our big three pitchers did the job this holiday weekend, winning three crucial games and putting us back in the mix. But they can't pitch anymore for a bit; we now we enter the abyss that is the back-end of our rotation. CBS Sportsline says it's Armas and Halama the next two nights. (Edit: I am a nervous ninny. We'll be fine. Today's paper says we have Darrell Rasner going tonight. I'm so relieved.) It would be an accomplishment to get one of those two next games.

ERV Win: Hernandez
ERV Loss: LoDuca and Encarnacion

3 Most Valuable Plays:
(1) LoDuca's GIDP in the 5th (-1.60)
(2) Hernandez's GIDP in the 6th (-1.56)
(3) Encarnacion's GIDP in the 7th (-1.49)

Does anyone think we should do something funky with the rotation so that Loaiza and Hernandez pitch off three-days rest, minimizing the appearance of pitchers 4 and 5? I don't think John Patterson would take to three days rest that well.

Why is it a relief that Rasner is pitching? Or was that sarcasm?

I was thinking that as well.. what would it look like?

1 - Patterson
2 - Scrub
3 - Scrub
4 - Hernandez
5 - Loaiza

6 - Patterson
7 - Scrub
8 - Hernandez
9 - Loaiza

10 - Scrub
11 - Patterson
12 - Hernandez
13 - Loaiza

14 - Scrub
15 - Scrub
16 - Hernandez
17 - Patterson
18 - Loaiza

19 - Scrub
20 - Scrub
21 - Hernandez
22 - Loaiza
23 - Patterson

24 - Scrub
25 - Hernandez
26 - Loaiza
27 - Scrub

28 - Patterson
29 - Hernandez
30 - Loaiza

so, with that set up, across 3 games, you'd have
Hernandez - 7
Loaiza - 7
Patterson - 6
Scrubs - 10

...as opposed to a 5-man rotation, where you'd have 6 each (and 12 scrub starts). Basically, by doing weird things with the rotation, you get two more starts out of Livo and Steve, Patterson doesn't get overworked, and two fewer starts by the arson squad.

For a standard 4-man rotation (across 28 games), you'd get 7 starts out of Livo, Steve, John, and 7 from the arsonists, but given what's been reported about how Long John takes to short rest games, that might not be the best idea.

Well, we only have 24 games left, and we have 3 off-days sprinkled between them, so those change things.

cyates, I LOVE the "arsonists" quip. I'm gonna call them that from now on ...

I think the "arson squad" line was used on the terrible O's bullpens of the 80's.. it seemed an appropriate term, though. :)
